Olympic security
The BBC are reporting that up to 6,000 teenagers could be trained to provide security during the 2012 Games, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games said.
The committee said it is in talks with 50 colleges to set up Level 2 BTEC diploma courses for 16 to 19-year-olds.
They will be given 30 hours of training on communication, keeping people safe at events and crowd control.
A spokesman said the students will form “a part of the multi-layered security provision” for the 2012 Olympics.
Last week it was reported that the 2012 games posed the greatest security challenge that the Country had faced since World War 2. This development is worrying. Who are the trainers going to be in Colleges? What security experience will they have? What Counter Terror briefings and training will the students be given? The questions go on.
Once again we have the establishment thinking anyone can do security where in fact it is a very specialised area and requires more that a BTEC 2 to be competent and especially at an event such as the Olympics where Terror and other groups will try and exploit security weaknesses in order to gain coverage of their cause given the Global audience.
Door Supervisors Course
We would like to announce that the Door Supervisors course scheduled for the end of Nov has been cancelled due to lack of numbers enrolling.
We have added course dates in Dec as an alternative and can announce a Christmas special price of £140 per person. The course will run from Fri 11 Dec 09 to Sun 13 Dec 09. This course is again being run in conjunction with the Door Supervisor Training Organisation (DSTO)

Animal Rights Remembrance Day
Animal Rights Activists are expected to hold Animal Rights Remembrance demonstrations across the Country today.

Ensure your security teams are suitably briefed.

Police trying to stop trouble at Midlands Takeaway
A Kenilworth takeaway could be forced to reduce trading hours and even employ a bouncer in a bid to stop rowdy behaviour late at night.
This is a snapshot of another incident surrounding licensed premises and highlight yet again why the SIA introducing Breakaway and Disengagement is a farce.
Worryingly this article mentions Bouncer and not Bouncers. Under no circumstances can or should any restraint be attempted alone and Door Supervisors should not be expected to work alone.
From a Health and Safety point of view there would be no justification or defence for using a lone Door Supervisor on any licensed premise. By the very nature of having a Door Supervisor on a premise would suggest there is a risk of unruly behaviour as in the case of this takeaway.
Watch this space for more information of the new changes to the Door Supervisors course.
Breakaway and Disengagement?
This is a press cutting highlighting why we think that Breakaway and Disengagement is an absolutely farcical way to introduce physical skills into the Door Supervision sector.
A RECKLESS reveller who hurled a broken bottle at a bar after being refused entry by door staff has narrowly avoided a spell behind bars.
Drunken Sam Gilbert threatened door staff with the jagged beer bottle before throwing it at the doors. The bottle smashed, and a sharp shard of glass hit a girl customer who was standing nearby.Victim Jade Birkett suffered heavy bleeding from the deep cut to her right hand, but did not need hospital treatment.
A judge told Gilbert, 19, it was lucky no-one was seriously injured in the incident, which happened in Hartlepool’s busy Church Street in the early hours of March 27. Teesside Crown Court heard that Gilbert had been repeatedly refused entry to Kal’s Bar earlier that night after turning up drunk and with a torn blood-stained jumper.
He tried to get in again at around 2.15am and fell over after the door supervisor blocked his way. Prosecutor Richard Parcell said: “He stood up holding a beer bottle which was smashed and approached the doorman with the jagged part in a threatening manner. “The doors were closed on him but the defendant threw the broken bottle towards the door.”It smashed further and injury was caused to a customer who was hit by the bottle on the right hand which she had raised to protect her face.”
Doormen overpowered Gilbert and kept him pinned down until police arrived.
He later told officers he did not remember anything about the incident.Gilbert, of Coleridge Avenue, Hartlepool, later admitted affray and actual bodily harm.
Newsflash
We wanted to let everyone know that we have ended our association with Havant College in Hampshire.
We ran Door Supervisors courses and Control and Restraint courses for unemployed people who were referred to the College programme by Job Centre Plus
We felt we could not continue with the programme and to save our reputation and good name within the industry decided to end our association.
This is not the time or place to engage in detail suffice to say we were becoming increasingly concerned with the way students were enrolled and the facilities within which we were expected to train.
As far as SPP Solutions are concerned we parted on amicable terms and wish to thank all Staff who helped during our time at Havant College.
