Counter Terrorism. The Threat

As soon as people hear the word “Terror” and “Counter Terrorism” it conjures up mental images of hooded men carrying AK47 assault rifles acting under the banner of Al Qaeda. The reality is very different. Currently there are some 60 Proscribed Groups in the UK Counter Terrorism battle. Proscription makes it an offence for listed organisations to recruit fundraise or pedal propaganda. Everyone knows Al Qaeda, so who are these other groups?

Domestic Counter Terrorism

Domestic Terrorism is on the rise. You may be working or have connections (including very loose connections) to animal experimentation companies and therefore could be a target for Domestic Terrorists. There are a number of Nationalist Groups (Scottish, Welsh as well as Northern Irish) who have turned to violence to further their aims. Industrial Espionage

MI5, the Security Service admits that the UK has the same amount of Foreign agents working here as were present during the Cold War era. Why is any company going to spend millions of pounds on research and development when they can rip YOURS off at a fraction of the price? Whether it is Government, Blue Chip, Medical, Manufacturing or intellectual property, it is all there and if you are unprepared or unaware then you are at risk. Recent figures estimate that the cost of Industrial Espionage to the UK annually is £27 billion with £21 billion being lost due to infiltration in Industry.

 

UK Counter Terrorism Strategy

The UK has a Counter Terrorism strategy and in Government this strategy is known as “CONTEST”. CONTEST covers 4 key areas, Prevent, Pursue, Protect and Prepare. We can give up to date training and information to prepare and protect you, your business and the information you hold from unscrupulous sources.

Terrorists have to find targets to attack and during this process of locating potential targets they need to carry out detailed reconnoitre. If you know what to look for this activity known as “Hostile Reconnaissance” can be spotted and reported quickly averting a potential attack. In the run up to the recent G20 summit in London Hostile Reconnaissance activity in the City area was at unprecedented levels. Do you know what to look for?

 

Counter Terrorism and Critical National Infrastructure

As Counter Terrorism takes precedence and London becomes harder to attack with the implementation of such things as the Government Security Zone (GSZ) and the level of police activity in the City, attention turns to the less well protected sites. There are sites around the country that are protected and fall under the banner of Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) but equally there are potential targets in every Town and City in the UK, Pubs Clubs or indeed any venue where large numbers of people gather.
