Mumbai attack

Intelligence agencies have discovered AQ plans to carry our Mumbai style attacks in Europe. During the attacks in Mumbai over 160 people were killed in the first mins of the attack.

Do we have an adequate response to such an attack? I believe that we don’t. The police couldnt react in sufficient numbers in that time and the SAS also could not mount any Counter Insurgency in that time. We have been told that armed officers who are already in the City area would be there to react.

When you see these officers walking round they are normally in pairs chatting to each other and not really taking account of whats happening around them. Any terrorist who carries out efficient Hostile Reconnaissance will note this and make the armed officers the first target. Terrorists will have fully automatic weapons where as the police only have single shot facility on the common H&K MP5.

Terror Threat

One of the reasons it is thought that the UK Threat level was raised from substantial to severe is to counter a new and emerging threat.

As we reported a few days ago AQ has gone through a restructure and are arguably more popular than ever in the Muslim world.

It is thought that AQ in Pakistan has the capability to take over an airliner and plan to fly it into a British City. We reported before Christmas how UK intelligence feared a Mumbai style attack on the Capital. AQ does indeed have global reach and despite mutterings to the contrary the UK is a hot breeding ground for fundamentalism.

We have no doubt that Farouk Abdulmutallab (Christmas Day bomber) was radicalised in the UK. We support free speech and of course with such liberal views on free speech is going to mean that suggestive ideas are bound to be aired.

We in no way advocate the damping down of freedom of speech but we certainly advocate the message to the masses that terrorism is and remains a very real risk and we ALL should be playing our part.

Vigilance is key to our safety. The Security Services have and do do a magnificent job but they also rely on low level intelligence, what's happening on your street that is unusual? Are you concerned about something that you have heard or witnessed?

We are very good and overriding our better judgement and trying to make sense of what we have seen or heard but if we take stock and report our fears it may just avert an attack.

The way AQ operate, especially in Europe and other developed Countries is to recruit people who are not on Security Service radar and so don't arouse suspicion.

The only way of combatting this is the vigilance of the masses. Many people don't think they or their businesses would be terrorist targets. What is a terrorist target? In the case of AQ any business and anybody is a target so burying heads in sand is a very short sighted and misguided view.

RIRA attacks.

The Real IRA has claimed responsibility for attacks against Catholic policemen.
The aim of the attacks has been to intimidate policemen and potential policemen from being a part of the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

The dissident republican Real IRA have admitted three overnight attacks in Londonderry.

The relatives of a Catholic police officer were the target of two suspected bombs.

The first device exploded outside his parents’ home in Shantallow, while a second device was examined outside his sister’s home in Kylemore Park.

In a statement, the group also claimed responsibility for shooting a man in his legs and hand at about 0130 BST.

A number of masked men forced their way into his house at Drumard Park in Ballymagroarty.

The man was taken to hospital where his condition is said to be stable.

There have been six paramilitary-style shootings in Derry in the past four weeks.

Several people were asked to leave their homes when a device was spotted at about 0730 BST. The security alert in Kylemore Park has ended.

In the Shantallow explosion, a car was damaged but no-one was injured.

Chief Superintendent Steven Martin said the devices planted were “capable of taking life”.

“They are trying to intimidate Catholic officers and their families from taking the brave step of joining the police and trying to move society forward.”

“That’s what terrorist criminals are about, they seek to cause harm and destruction,” he said.

“I can assure you that the police officer in question, who I’ve spoken to today, is committed to policing and will be out doing his duty very quickly.”

“His bravery contrasts starkly to the cowardly actions of those last night who put these devices in ordinary streets in the Cityside of this city,” he added.

‘Solidarity’

Sinn Fein assembly member Raymond McCartney condemned the attacks.

“This family is a part of our community and I would call on the community to show solidarity with them at this time,” he said.

“While most people are working to build a peaceful future it would seem that a minuscule and unrepresentative group think that by carrying out cowardly actions based on spurious excuses, they will frustrate continued progress.

“They will not succeed and should stop their activity before it leads to the killing of more innocent people.”

SDLP leader and Foyle MP Mark Durkan, described the attacks as “cowardly”.

“These are sinister attempts not only to unnerve a young officer and his family but to intimidate the entire community,” he said.

“The policing service which we now have has been mandated by the Irish people, north and south, in the Good Friday Agreement.

“Those who serve in its ranks are carrying out a patriotic duty which has the endorsement of the overwhelming number of citizens in Derry and the country.”
