MI5 Update

The Metropolitan Police Service has launched a campaign to raise awareness of the threat to the UK from terrorism. Public vigilance and awareness is essential in fighting terrorism and the public are being encouraged to call the confidential Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321 if they see any suspicious activity or behaviour.

Assistant Commissioner John Yates, head of MPS Specialist Operations and Chair of the Association of Chief Police Officers, Terrorism and Allied Matters, said:

“The police and security services need the help of the public to protect the country from the threat of terrorism. We cannot do it alone.

“We all have a responsibility to remain vigilant and aware and to report any suspicious activity. We must not become complacent.”

UK Terror warning for travellers.

The Foreign Office has issued a warning strongly urging travellers not the visit the Northern Mali town of Timbuktu because of the fears of terrorism.

In June of this year a British tourist, Edwin Dyer was killed by a group claiming links to Al Qaeda.

The Foreign Office has said the threat of terrorism, and specifically kidnapping is now high and have advised to stay away from the whole of Northern Mali.

Several Westerners have been kidnapped in recent months and held for ransom.

Government launches counter terrorism science and technology strategy

Experts from industry and academia are being invited to provide groundbreaking innovations to help combat the threat of terrorism as part of the government’s science and technology counter terrorism strategy launched today.

Scientists are being asked to come forward with state-of-the-art ideas that could be used to identify new threats and develop ways to counter the challenges we face from international terrorism.
